GABBAGES FLOODS HOMES AND SHOPS IN NUNGUA AFTER HEAVY RAINS

Residents of Nungua "Nii Ship3" Road are battling a growing sanitation problem as heavy rains continue to flood homes and shops with gabbages. The issue, which worsens after each downpour, is being blamed on poor drainage and choked gutters in the area.

During heavy rainfall, gabbages from nearby market areas are swept into the streets by overflowing drains. The waste then spreads across the community, entering shops, blocking doorways, flooding people's homes, and leaving gabbages and bad waste after the rainfall.

“It’s very frustrating,” said Madam Lawrencia, a local shop owner. “Each time it rains, dirty water filled with gabbages enters my store. I have to clean everything before I can even start work again.”

Residents say the situation is affecting their health, businesses, and daily lives. Many fear an outbreak of diseases such as cholera and typhoid if the issue is not addressed soon.

Community members believe the drainage system is too narrow to handle the volume of water and waste during rainfall.

“The gutters are too small and poorly maintained , and people intentionally pour out their gabbages to be swept away by the rain, which ends up choking qutters and leaving the waste on the streets after the rain, this is due to lack of dustbins around,” said mad. Regina Tawiah, another resident owner. “They need to be expanded and regularly cleaned to stop this from happening again.”

Residential and people of Nungua are calling on the municipal assembly to take immediate action to their demands

Until long-term solutions are implemented, residents of Nungua say they will continue to live in fear whenever the clouds gather, unsure of what the next rainfall will bring into their homes.
